UK Airshow Calendar 2021

This is a list of UK Airshow Calendars from previous years, and may be useful to find out when a particular airshow was held.

Current Airshow Calendar

Despite many people starting to receive vaccinations for COVID-19, there was still a lot of uncertainty whether public events would be allowed to take place this year, which resulted in all the major air shows being cancelled. The public were allowed back inside museums from the middle of May onwards as more people had been vaccinated and the virus was being better managed. The Royal International Air Tattoo, Royal Navy International Air Day, RAF Cosford Air Show, and Flying Legends Air Show, which was to have taken place at Sywell for the first time, were all cancelled, along with many Seafront shows, for the second year running.

Shuttleworth continued with their 'Drive-in' air displays and Duxford put on several themed 'Flying Days'. The Midlands Air Festival at Ragley Hall went ahead in June along with the Battle of Britain Airshow at Headcorn. The Duxford Summer Air Show took place in July along with several smaller events and August saw limited displays at the Folkestone Air Display, Sidmouth Air Show, and Clacton 150 event which all featured the Red Arrows and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). The East Kirkby Airshow and Little Gransden Air & Car Show also took place in August.

The Bournemouth Air Festival took place in September which included a good mixture of display aircraft over four days. However, there was an unfortunate incident when one of the Aerosuperbatic Wing-Walker aircraft had to ditch into the sea, close to shore, but both pilot and wingwalker suffered only minor injuries and were okay. The Abingdon Air & Country Show, Duxford Battle of Britain Air Show, and Jersey & Guernsey Shows also took place in September.

2021 saw the passing of Captain Tom Moore on the 2nd February and Dr Robert Pleming (Vulcan to the sky) on the 3rd February.

The fifth Poseidon arrived at RAF Lossiemouth in February, the sixth arrived in September, the seventh arrived in October and the eighth in November 2021. There will eventually be a total of nine of these Maritime Patrol Aircraft at Lossiemouth. Around ten RAF Puma helicopters performed a 50th Anniversary Flypast around the UK on the 7th July including a Puma with a recently painted special paint scheme. In September, a joint RAF & Qatar Hawk T2 training squadron was established at RAF Leeming. Another three new UK F-35 Lightnings arrived at RAF Marham on the 28th October 2021.

The Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) was published in March 2021 and the first Crowsnest in service on a Merlin helicopter, giving it Airbourne Early Warning capability at the end of March 2021.

The Tutor Display Aircraft cancelled due to technical problems and the AAC Apache Display cancelled due to the unpredictability of the display season. However, the RAF Chinook Display Aircraft received a specially painted helicopter for their 40th anniversary, achieving PDA on 10th August, and the RAF Typhoon Display Aircraft also received a new paint scheme for the 2021/22 display season.

The Red Arrows achieved Public Display Authority (PDA) on 20th May in Greece before returning to the UK on 26th May. They performed several displays and flypasts in the UK and overseas. They performed a flypast on 31st March of the Runnymede Memorial for the Royal Australian Air Force Centenary on 31st March as well as a display at the G7 Summit in Cornwall and a flypast of Windsor Castle for the Queen's official Birthday both on 12th June. Their first public display in the UK was at the Midlands Air Festival at the start of June. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) and RAF Typhoon Display Aircraft achieved PDA on 13th May. The BBMF Lancaster was still at Duxford undergoing maintenance and didn't return to RAF Coningsby until September. The RAF Falcons achieved PDA on 28th May and the Royal Navy Wildcat achieved PDA on 11th May ready for UK displays.

The Queen Elizabeth Carrier Strike Group with eighteen USMC & 617Sqn F-35B Lightnings as well as fourteen Merlin & Wildcat helicopters set sail in the Spring on her maiden operational deployment to the Indo-Pacific region along with three Destroyers, three Frigates, two Support ships and a Nuclear attack submarine (SSN). Unfortunately a UK F-35B (ZM152) was lost during its deployment onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, on 17th November 2021, but thankfully the pilot was okay. In May, Navy Wings Hawker Sea Fury T20 G-RNHF (VX281) was forced to conduct an emergency landing in a field close to RNAS Yeovilton following a problem with the engine. Both pilots escaped injury but unfortunately the aircraft was severely damaged.

The RAF E-3D Sentry landed at Waddington on 4th August 2021 for the last time as it is being retired before being replaced by the Wedgetail in 2023. A SkyGuardian unmanned aircraft (N190TC), a pre-production example of the new Protector Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, arrived at RAF Waddington in August for trials before operating from RAF Lossiemouth where it took part in Exercise Joint Warrior. The RAF are to get an initial sixteen MQ-9B Protector remotely piloted aircraft which are to start entering service by mid-2024. RAF Lakenheath received their first four new F-35A Lightning II aircraft (495th Fighter Squadron 'Valkyries') on the 15th December 2021.
