UK Airshow Calendar 2017

This is a list of UK Airshow Calendars from previous years, and may be useful to find out when a particular airshow was held.

Current Airshow Calendar

Cancellations this year include 'The LAA & Homebuilt Fly In 2017' on 21st May because of rain and Old Buckenham Airfield being waterlogged. Cholmondeley Power and Speed on 09th-11th June was cancelled while plans are made for the long term shape of the event. The Great Yarmouth Air Show on 15th-18th June was postponed due to the significantly higher than anticipated additional costs associated with counter-terrorism measures and medical cover for the air show. Culdrose Air Day on 27th July cancelled because this is a busy year for them with a high operational tempo. The 'Victory Show' at Foxlands Farm, Leicestershire on 8th-10th September was cancelled due to additional restrictions by the CAA. The Centenary Airshow at Old Sarum Airfield on 16th-17th September was cancelled due to the new regulations and their extremely high and complex risk assessment needs. The Dawlish Air Show did not take place in 2017 due to insufficient funding.

Navy Wings Sea Vixen (G-CVIX XP924) suffered hydraulic issues and made a wheels-up landing at RNAS Yeovilton on Saturday 27th May 2017. The pilot, Cdr Simon Hargreaves performed a highly controlled wheels-up landing and was safe and well. Work by Assessors estimate that it could take between 3-4 years and cost £2-3M to get her flying again.

The Royal Navy Lynx helicopter retired in March 2017 and on 17th March 2017 there was a final flypast of four Royal Navy Lynx Mk.8 helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron.

Six USAF F-35A Lightning II aircraft deployed to RAF Lakenheath on Saturday 15th April 2017 for the first time.

On Tuesday the 27th of June a formation of four Tucano T1 aircraft from 72(R) Squadron conducted a 'Grand Flypast' to commemorate the Squadrons Centenary.

The Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier set sail from Rosyth dockyard on Monday 26th June 2017 for the first time. She left dock to start sea trials and in August she sailed into her home port at Portsmouth.

P-51B Mustang 'Berlin Express' made a transatlantic flight from Houston, Texas to the IWM Duxford in the UK to display at Duxford's Flying Legends, and the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford. She arrived in the UK on Tuesday 4th July and took part in the Flying Legends airshow but unfortunately suffered a shattered canopy on his first pass, which also damaged the tail fin and cut short the display. The aircraft landed safely and on Sunday it was replaced by Robert Tyrrell's P-51D Mustang 'Miss Helen'. It was to have displayed as part of the Heritage Flight at RIAT along with the F-22A Raptor but was replaced by P-51D Mustang 'Frenesi'.

The Royal International Air Tattoo 2017 theme was the 70th anniversary of the US Air Force and the airshow featured 'The Thunderbirds', F-22A Raptor as well as flypasts by a KC-135R Stratotanker, C-130J-30 Hercules, F-15C Eagles & F-15E Strike Eagles and F-16C Fighting Falcons. On Sunday there was a flypast of the B-2 Stealth Bomber and on the ground were a CV-22B Osprey, B-52H Stratofortress, C-17A Globemaster III, KC-135R Stratotanker, Lockheed U-2, B-1B Lancer, HH-60G Pave Hawk as well as many USAF fighters. Other highlights at RIAT were a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, Italian Air Force A-200A Tornado, Turkish Air Force Soloturk F-16C Fighting Falcon and French Air Force Couteau Delta (Mirage 2000Ns) as well as many other fighter jets. Display teams included the Finnish Air Force 'Midnight Hawks'.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) celebrated their 60th anniversary this year and the BBMF Lancaster had recently completed a major service and has been painted in a new scheme by the 'Aircraft Restoration Company' based at Duxford. The Merlin-engined aircraft of the BBMF were grounded in August 2017 after a routine inspection had highlighted a fault with one of the Merlin engines in a Hurricane aircraft. The problem was resolved and the Lancaster and Hurricane were both cleared to display just in time for the Scampton Airshow in September.

The Red Arrows performed their displays on a different display axis at both the Cosford Airshow and Duxford Flying Legends Airshow which resulted in a more distant display for many in the crowd. This was done by the Red Arrows so as to avoid flying over nearby villages.

The Scampton Airshow (09-10 September) took place for the first time this year.
