Current Airshow Calendar

South Ayrshire Council announced that it would be holding an event at Ayr Seafront called 'The International Ayr Show - Festival of Flight' in September 2023. The event kicked off on Friday 8th September until Sunday 10th September 2023 which included an evening air display on the Friday and a full air show on the Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Weston Air Festival was cancelled amid rising costs and the Sunderland City Council confirmed that there were no plans to run Sunderland Airshow in 2023 or the future citing 'global climate emergency' as the key factor. The Newcastle Festival of Flight in Northern Ireland also didn't take place in 2023.

RIAT 2023 had the '100th anniversary of air-to-air refuelling' as its main theme and there were a collection of various tanker aircraft. It was also the '100th Anniversary of the Italian Air Force'. RIAT 2023 saw the UK's debut of the Messerschmitt Me 262 replica which is operated by 'Flugmuseum Messerschmitt' and supported by the 'Airbus Heritage Flight'. Taking part in the air display were the Saudi Hawks, Fursan Al Emarat and the Spanish Navy displayed the EAV-8B Harrier II. The USAF displayed their B-52 Stratofortress and CV-22B Osprey. The weather was not great, with a good deal of rain on Friday, followed by showers and very windy conditions on Saturday, although there were plenty of aircraft displaying, and by Sunday it became much less windy allowing many of the aircraft to display.

There was no airshow at RNAS Yeovilton again but the RAF Cosford Airshow went ahead with the Patrouille Suisse, Royal Jordanian Falcons and Phenix Ambassadeurs parachutistes in the display. There was also a UK F-35B Lightning which took part at the end of the show.

The 'Flying Legends' airshow made a welcome return in 2023, taking place at Leeds East Airport (previously called RAF Church Fenton). It did however clash with the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) on the weekend of 15th & 16th July 2023. With the unsettled wet and windy weather there were a few cancellations in the display however Sunday was much better with almost a full display.

The King's Coronation included a flypast over Buckingham Palace on Saturday 6th May 2023. There was a rehearsal on the 25th April 2023 but the actual flypast on 6th May, which was to include over 60 aircraft, was badly affected by the weather, with only the Red Arrows and helicopters actually performing the flypast.

This year was the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, commonly known as the Dambusters Raid. This was commemorated on the 16th May 2023 by flying the BBMF Lancaster over about 18 former bomber stations in Lincolnshire.

Liverpool hosted a 3-day event, from 26th May to 28th May 2023, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic (BoA80). This included flypasts & air displays over the 3 days. Aircraft included the BBMF (Lancaster, Hurricane, Spitfire), Fairey Swordfish, Supermarine Seafire, and RAF Poseidon.

With the retirement of the RAF Hercules by the end of June 2023, three RAF Hercules aircraft (ZH868, ZH870, ZH871) performed flypasts over several locations of significance to the Hercules service and 47 Squadron on Wednesday 14th June 2023.

The King's Birthday Flypast took place on Saturday 17th June 2023, which was very similar to the planned King's Coronation Flypast, which had been badly affected by poor weather, however, the King's Birthday Flypast was able to go ahead as planned with over 60 aircraft flying over Buckingham palace.

Two new F-35B Lightning aircraft (ZM166, ZM167) arrived at RAF Marham on the 22nd June 2023 with a third (ZM165) remaining in the USA. This brings the total UK F-35 Lightnings to thirty two (as of Sept 2023), not including the F-35B (ZM152) that was lost on 17.11.21, with four aircraft remaining in the USA with 17 Sqn (Test & Evaluation) at Edwards Air Force Base and twenty eight Lightnings at RAF Marham.

HMS Queen Elizabeth took part in exercises and operations in European waters in early 2023 and deployed again in September 2023 with F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters as well as Merlin and Wildcat helicopters to lead a mixed group of warships from various nations as they head to the Norwegian Sea and waters of northern Europe. HMS Prince of Wales returned to Portsmouth in August 2023, after being repaired, as she suffered damage to her propellor shaft in 2022. HMS Prince of Wales sailed from Portsmouth on 1st September 2023 for her Autumn deployment to the Eastern Seaboard of the USA where she will be operating F-35 Stealth fighters, USMC MV-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft as well as advanced drone technologies.
