Battle of the Atlantic 80, Liverpool - 26 to 28 May 2023

Liverpool will be hosting a 3-day event, from 26th May to 28th May 2023, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic (BoA80).

There will be a series of family-friendly events across the Bank Holiday Weekend including several flypasts/displays by the BBMF Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane, Navy Wings Swordfish & Seafire as well as an RAF Poseidon. All flypasts will follow the River Mersey, with good visibility from both sides of the river.

Battle of the Atlantic 80 Flypasts/Displays:

Friday 26th May
1211 - 1216: Flypast (North to South) Swordfish, BBMF, Poseidon
1900 - 1908: Swordfish display

Saturday 27th May
1100 - 1110: Seafire and Swordfish formation display
1150 - 1205: BBMF (Lancaster, Hurricane, Spitfire) Flypast (3 passes)
1315 - 1330: (Lancaster, Hurricane, Spitfire) Flypast (3 passes)
1500 - 1510: Seafire and Swordfish formation display

Sunday 28th May
1230 - 1245: (Lancaster, Hurricane, Spitfire) Flypast (3 passes)
1350 - 1400: Swordfish display
1720 - 1730: Swordfish display

The weekend will get underway with a private service of commemoration at St Nick's Church at the Pier Head. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be the guest of honour at the service, which will acknowledge the sacrifice of the thousands of UK and allied sailors involved in the Battle of the Atlantic, both merchant and military.

Apart from the flypasts & displays, there will be a riverside 1940s themed military village at the Pier Head, Visiting vessels open to visitors in the Mersey, Music and dance performances, family events at Western Approaches Museum, a concert by HM Royal Marines at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall, a drumhead ceremony at the Pier Head and a March of the medals.

Visiting ships include Type 45 Destroyer - HMS Defender, French Frigate Bretagne, Trinity House Vessel Patricia and American destroyer USS Ramage. HMS Defender and the Bretagne will be open to visitors, welcoming members of the public on board throughout Saturday and Sunday.
