UK Airshow Calendar 2007

Current Airshow Calendar

The Summer of 2007 was very wet with large areas of England and Wales having over twice the average rainfall for June and July, and this had an effect on several UK air shows.

The RAF Spirit of Adventure event at Dalton Barracks, Abingdon, Oxfordshire took place on Saturday 26th May 2007 but was cancelled on Sunday 27th May 2007 due to the weather which was low cloud and heavy rain. The RAF Spirit of Adventure event at Kinross in Scotland on 25th-26th August 2007 was also cancelled. No official reason was given but it is believed that attendance figures were significantly lower than expected on Saturday 26th May 2007.

The Kent Air Show, Margate that was to take place at Palm Bay, Margate in Kent on Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th June 2007 also cancelled. It comes after the show organisers informed Thanet District Council that they would not be able to take any financial risk over the event. This would mean the Council having to underwrite the Air Show by £300,000 this year. In previous year, the underwriting had been just £30,000. It was however expected to return in 2008.

The RAF Waddington International Air Show also suffered because of the wet weather and although it was able to open its gates to the public on Saturday with a limited display, it had to cancel the show on Sunday 1st July. Waddington saw the UK debut of the Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKIs who were in the UK for Exercise Indra Dhanush, a joint exercise with the RAF. They also brought along their Il-76 and Il-78 support aircraft which were on static display.

The Royal International Air Tattoo saw the last UK display of the F-117A 'Nighthawk' Stealth Fighter before it was retired. The USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, The Thunderbirds also displayed at RIAT in this year. There was also a short demo from one of the Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKIs which had displayed at Waddington.

The Royal Air Force put on an impressive multi-role demo which included the E-3D Sentry, Tornado F3s, Tornado Gr4s, Chinook, C-130 Hercules, Hawk T1s, as well as troops and pyrotechnics as they played out a fictitious scenario which represented real-life RAF operations. The RAF multi-role demo was performed at several major UK air shows including Biggin Hill, RAF Cosford, Kemble, and RIAT.

Through a combination of public donations and lottery funding, Vulcan XH558 was restored to airworthy condition by the Vulcan To The Sky Trust, who returned it to flight on Thursday 18 October 2007 from Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire.
