Following the tragic accident at RAF Coningsby, and while the formal investigation is ongoing, the RAF has instigated a temporary pause in flying for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight [BBMF]. From the official Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Facebook page (22.07.24): "This Winter, the BBMF Lancaster, one of only two flying examples in the world, has undergone extensive pre-planned depth maintenance activity, including the manufacture and replacement of the entire tail plane. Now, following extensive inspections and testing, the Lancaster is ready to fly again. BBMF Spitfire and Hurricane flying remains paused whilst the investigation into the tragic Spitfire incident continues." The BBMF Lancaster took to the air, over the skies of Lincolnshire, for the first time this year, on Monday 29th July 2024. On Tuesday 6th August 2024, the BBMF Lancaster took to the air again and achieved Public Display Authority (PDA) and is expected to display at the Blackpool and Compton Abbas Airshows, as well as various event flypasts, subject to weather and serviceability. On Thursday 3rd October 2024 the following was announced on the official BBMF Facebook page: 'After an extensive major maintenance programme and detailed safety assessment, Spitfire PM631 is ready to fly again and will soon take to the skies for the first time since 2021. PM631 is a later mark of Spitfire which is powered by the Rolls Royce Griffon engine. Merlin powered Spitfires and Hurricanes remain on a flying pause whilst the investigation into the Spitfire accident continues.' These BBMF flypasts take place at festivals, fairs, village fetes, steam fairs, car shows, museums, memorials, fly-in events etc and do not include major air displays which are listed separately.
