Sunderland Airshow History
Sunderland International Airshow is one of the biggest free annual airshows in Europe, held at the Roker and Seaburn seafronts.

It takes place over the course of three days, usually the final weekend in July (Friday to Sunday), and attracts around 1,000,000 spectators every year.

The airshow was first held in 1989 as a single day show, and was planned to be a one-off event, when it attracted 250,000 spectators. Due to its success, from 1991 it became a two-day show, and subsequently three days.

Event timings:

Friday - flying will take place from 6.10pm with entertainment on the stage from 4pm. Evening event will close with fireworks at approximately 9.45pm.

Saturday - Activities on the ground will run from 10am-6pm, with flying displays from 11am - 5pm.

Sunday - Activities on the ground will run from 10am-6pm, with flying displays from 12noon - 5pm.

All displays and flying times are subject to change due to weather or operational conditions.

The Sunderland International Air Show usually takes place over three days on the last weekend of July, and the air display is held over the coastline at Seaburn and Roker in Sunderland.

With high-speed jets, breathtaking display teams and precision flying in the air and a massive choice of activities on the ground, there's something for all the family at this action-packed weekend. The Royal Navy also traditionally have a warship off the coast every year.

The Friday night launch is rounded off with a large firework display.

Fireworks, flying displays and fantastic music will launch this year's Airshow on Friday 21 July.

The Friday evening launch for the weekend event has become increasingly popular, and large crowds are expected to gather on Cliffe Park and along the seafront again to enjoy the music and flying spectacular.

A full night's flying programme including the Red Arrows and Typhoon Display team will provide a spectacular aerial backdrop, to music from the stage and ground based displays, activities and entertainment along the seafront.

Saturday and Sunday:
Roker and Seaburn host the weekend aerial displays which always attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the city's coast.

Spectators can expect a dazzling array of fly-pasts, stunts and aerobatics while an equally packed ground programme will include stalls, activities, food outlets and music.

The air displays on Saturday and Sunday are set to run from 10am until 6pm. On the ground there will be plenty of family-friendly attractions and in the Roker Park Family Zone are children's activities, trampolines, small inflatables, zorbing, zip wire, mini tanks, and storytelling.
