Appearance:
Male - The male Aukland Islands Teal has a dark brown plumage with a mottled brown breast, a hint of glossy green on the nape, dark eyes with a white eye-ring, a bluish beak with black markings, pale abdomen, and the legs and feet are grey. This is a flightless dabbling duck which has very small wings.
Female - The female has a duller brown plumage, paler abdomen, and has a white eye-ring.
Size: - Typical Adult is about 48cm (19in).
Food: - Invertebrates, insects, larvae, molluscs, and algae.
Habitat/Range: - Sheltered coastal waters with dense vegetation, tussockgrass fields, megaherb shrubland, streams, and kelp beds in the Aukland Islands of New Zealand.
Breeding Habitat/Resident, 
Migration or Winter Area.Breeding Season: - From late October onwards.
Eggs: - 3 to 4 (cream or buff colour).
Notes: - The Aukland Islands Teal is a flightless Australasian dabbling duck. It is mostly crepuscular to nocturnal and prefers to hide from predators. This duck is classed as 'Vulnerable' due to its small population and being limited to a few islands. It used to breed on the main Aukland Island but due to the introduction of predators it now breeds on the smaller islands only.
