Southend Airshow & Military Festival 2014 Cancelled
Funding shortfall leads organizers to postpone inaugural event and look towards 2015
Today Southend Airshow & Military Festival is sad to announced that they have been unable to raise the final £35,000 required for the 2014 event and so have made the difficult decision to postpone the event until September 2015.
The 27th July 2013 marked that day John Delaney and Thomas Curtis received final approval from Southend-On-Sea Council to take over the Southend Airshow as a community led event for the benefit of the town. Over the last year John, Thomas and the Airshow the team have made incredible progress in returning the event to Southend seafront.
Record funds raised
In less than a year the team raised £185,000 sourced from Headline Sponsor Toomey Motor Group, catering and trade agreements combined with community fund raising efforts. Through new partnerships made with Service Sponsors and a focus on efficiency the team made £80,000 of cuts to the 2012 budget. This left just £35,000 to raise by March 1st and we hoped that other sponsorship would be found to ensure that the event could return as planned, sadly it did not come forward in time. Although it was possible to run a smaller event with the funds raised, it would feature fewer aircraft and thus not match the planned vision for Southend Airshow & Military Festival.
Headline and Service Sponsors remain onboard
Toomey Motor Group remain committed to the event as are all Service Sponsors, this allows Southend Airshow to roll over the £185,000 raised in 2013 and to start the journey towards the 2015 event with a solid foundation.
Thomas Curtis had this to say:
“Though its undoubtedly a sad day for myself and the team, postponing the event to 2015 does not remove the achievements we have made this year. From the creation of Southend Airshow CIC, ‘Gibson’ the Airshow Bear and raising an amazing £185,000 in just nine months. This is combined with the massive success we have found found on Facebook, where we have in excess of 23,000 supporters making us one of the largest, if not the largest Airshow Facebook page in the country.”
“While we could have pushed ahead with a revised smaller event using the existing existing funds raised, we have elected to postpone the event to 2015 to ensure that Southend gets the Airshow it deserves.”
John Delaney added:
“It was always going to be a huge task to put everything together within nine months so although I am disappointed we ran out of time for 2014 I am still delighted with what we have achieved so far. This is underlined by the total commitment of all our supporters and sponsors who have agreed to continue working with us towards the revised 2015 Airshow dates.”
“My sincere thanks to Southend Airport, The Echo, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, Southend Council, EMSA, plus our Sponsors Toomey Motor Group, BTMK, Goldwyns, Urban Design & Print, Billericay IT, Candy Entertainment, The Skylark Hotel, Teddy Station for their continued support for 2015.”
