Bonus and Event Aviation Days 2014

Each year, the IWM Duxford Airfield Team runs a series of Fly-In Bonus Days and Aviation Event Days.

The 2014 Fly-In Bonus Days and Aviation Event Days include a major event for the General Aviation (GA) community which has become a must to attend. This is the Safety Day, held in our AirSpace exhibition, where visitors can meet with aviation experts, listen to presentations and discuss points of interest.

In addition to the popular regular Fly-In Bonus Days, new for 2014 is the British Microlight Aircraft Association Bonus Days on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 August and the culmination of the Around Britain Air Rally on Friday 13 June.

Duxford Airfield Safety Day
Saturday 12 April

Table-top sessions run continuously from 10.30am to 4.30pm.
Presentations run from 11.30am to 1.30pm and are repeated from 2pm to 4pm

Presentations include:

∑ Jon Bolton on NATS infringement with Matt Thompson on Farnborough LARS
Jon and Matt will run a joint presentation on the subject of airspace infringements and how to avoid them.

∑ Barry Tucker and Dan Batty on Distress and Diversion (D&D)
In addition to making the GA community aware of what Distress and Diversion can offer, this presentation will also help GA pilots to understand what D&D need from them. This presentation is designed to reduce the stresses that pilots are under when they suffer emergencies or disorientation.

∑ Chris Finnigan, Manager, GA Flight Ops, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)
The CAA presentation will look at the importance of improving pilot pre-flight planning to help reduce the number of GA aircraft flying through parachute drop zones, glider sites and military danger areas. The presentation will include a brief on the likely increase in the level of military flying in the UK, resulting from the drawdown of forces from Afghanistan and the reintegration by fleet type of military aircraft to different parts of the UK.

∑ Nils Jamieson, GasCo
Nils will talk about practical threat and error management for GA pilots.

The Around Britain Air Rally
Concludes at IWM Duxford on Friday 13 June

In June 2004, an assorted group of 45 aircraft left Sywell to fly around Britain by an anticlockwise route. The main objective was to give less experienced pilots the chance to spread their wings in a reasonably challenging environment but accompanied by crew used to aerial touring. Ten days, 18 airfields and about 1400 miles later, the rally finished at Old Buckenham.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of that flight, the Around Britain Air Rally will be flown again in June 2014, this time concluding at IWM Duxford. See around 30 aircraft finish the aerial tour they started out on ten days earlier, by flying onto the historic Duxford airfield.
