RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day - News Release

Air Day's not just about eyes to the skies. There are plenty of ground attractions to interest every member of the family. There will be performances by the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, who performed at the Diamond Jubilee River Pageant and in stark contrast a dynamic demonstration by HMS Heron's Field Gun Crew. The hangars will be open with interactive displays from the Station's various departments, whilst outside there will be trade stalls, fairground, classic car exhibition, picnic areas, simulator rides, and more to keep everyone entertained.

One of the most popular displays is the Commando Helicopter Force's Royal Marines Village. Traditionally this showcase corner of the Static ground display has seen a Forward Operating Base (FOB) with Commando Helicopters and tentage, showing how the Sailors and Royal Marines live and work on Operations in the far flung corners of the world. This year however CHF are planning a more “Hands-on” experience with the public. On display will be up to eight impressive vehicles used by the force.

They will be: § Land Rover and trailer rigged up ready to be underslung by the Sea King
§ Land Rover Ambulance with a full medical team to show off their capability
§ Tracked All Terrain vehicles used in the arctic and desert environments to move people around and set up as a Communications platform for ground to air signalling
§ Osh Kosh close support tanker used for refuelling the aircraft
§ Viking all terrain vehicle with armour used on the front line in Afghanistan
§ 15 ton MAN Support vehicle used for heavy lift
§ Unit Support tanker which supplies the fuel to run CHF vehicles

Throughout the day the vehicle park will be manned by their operators and people will be encouraged to come over to experience what its like to operate and handle them. From heavy truck enthusiasts to children, all will be welcomed and entertained by the Commando crews. A Field kitchen display set up inside the FOB will show-off the culinary skills of Royal Navy and Royal Marine Chefs who are integral part of the Commando Helicopter Force. The static aircraft forming part of the FOB will be the Sea King Commando Mk 4 and a Lynx Mk 7 manned and open for the public to crawl over and ask questions to the attending aircrew.

Lieutenant Dave Drennan part of the CHF OPS Team said, “We aim to get closer to presenting a better experience for the public. It's not just about flying in the Jungly world; we have an enormous support crew who produce the goods in all conditions. It hard to replicate what it's really like to operate from field conditions, this should be a great hands-on show for Air Day”.
