RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day 2008 - Press Release

Mighty USAF Bomber Returns to Air Day

With less than a month now to go, RNAS Yeovilton Air Day 2008 is rapidly approaching. One of the real highlights of this year’s five-hour Flying Display will be the United States Air Force Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, marking the first showing by this vast, eight-engined aircraft at Air Day in eight years. The B-52’s Air Day appearance represents one of a very limited number of opportunities to see this legendary Cold War-era bomber at an airshow outside the United States this year.

An Aviation Legend
The B-52 is a true aviation legend, having now been in uninterrupted service with the USAF for over 50 years, and set to continue serving for at least another 30! It first flew in 1952, with 744 ultimately built.

Military Use
Despite its age, the B-52 remains a highly significant contributor to US military airpower. During its first half-century of active service, the type has participated in a number of conflicts including Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm and, more recently, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Experimental Use
Although fundamentally a strategic bomber, the B-52 has also been involved in some experimental and research programmes. In the 1960s, it was the launch platform for the rocket-powered North American X-15 aircraft, while, in more modern times, it has been used in biofuel trials – testing a hybrid fuel mixture that, one day, could power the entire USAF fleet.

Other Flying Stars
Aside from the B-52, Air Day’s Flying Display will also feature other foreign participation including the Royal Jordanian Falcons aerobatic team, as well as modern fast jets like the Typhoon and Harrier, and, as ever, the spectacular show-closing Commando Assault.

The current list of participating aircraft can be viewed at www.yeoviltonairday.co.uk.
