Imperial War Museum Duxford - Press Release

Meet veterans from the Second World War to Afghanistan conflict

Veterans froma range of conflicts, fromthe SecondWorld War through to recent operations in Afghanistan, will be ready and willing to chat about their extraordinary experiences on Sunday 19, Tuesday 21,Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 August at IWM Duxford.

Between11amand 1pm in AirSpace, hear about the diverse range of experiences that these veterans underwent during very different conflicts and how those eventsmade a lasting impact on their lives.

Between them, our veterans have served in conflicts across the globe, ranging fromthe SecondWorld War to Afghanistan and including the Malayan conflict, the Korean War, Northern Ireland and the Falklands War.

They range frommembers of the Royal Air Force, Army and Royal Navy to National Service conscripts, members of the British and Belgian resistance organisations and civilians who experienced the Second WorldWar Home Front, playing on the wartime bomb sites and enduring air raids, rationing and evacuation.

Veterans chatting about their fascinating stories during the four days will include:

Sunday 19 August

Peter Earle

Peter served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War, on bomb disposal and on escort duties for submarines and shipping. After the war ended in Europe, he was stationed in the Far East.

Ron Liversage MBE

Ron was an Air Gunner during the Second World War. He was stationed in Malta during the siege, and then served in theWestern Desert. He flew thirty operations over Europe in Lancasters during the war.

Denise Edwards

Denise was born in Belgiumand lived in a village near Antwerp during the SecondWorld War. She was involved with the Belgian Resistance Movement while at college and with the YMCA during the liberation of Belgium.

David Armstrong

David was a Captain in the Intelligence Corps from1966 to 1997. He was particularly involved with air reconnaissance work in Ireland, Hong Kong and Germany.

Len Bloomfield

Len was a Sergeant in H.M. Royal Marines during the Second World War. One of his roles was to provide bombardment support to the Land Forces atmajor landings. He was also involved with the convoys in Malta and in the Atlantic Ocean.

Charlie Dormer

Charlie was a Sergeant in the Army during the SecondWorldWar. He served in Sicily, North Africa, Italy, Austria and the British Isles.

Tuesday 21 August

Ralph Rutherford

Ralph was in the Royal Air Force fromJuly 1944 until June 1953. He flew with Bomber Command just after the end of the Second World War, then with Fighter Command from1949. He flew some of the early jets, including Vampires and Meteors.

Bill Green

Bill was in the 1st Battalion of the 3rd East Anglian Regiment from1959 to 1961. He served during the Malaya Conflict as a Private in the Infantry.

George Evans

George served in the Grenadier Guards from1971 to 1993. He served in Northern Ireland and in the Gulf War in 1991. He was then recalled to his unit during the war in Iraq in 2005 and was recalled to Afghanistan in 2007.

Adrian Dunne

Adrian served in the Royal Anglian Regiment between 1986 and 1994. He carried outmany different duties in the Infantry, including those of driver, anti-tank operative, signaller, sectionmedic and section commander. He served in Germany, the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, the UK and Canada.

Tony Leonard

Tony was a Corporal in the RAF Regiment from1979 to 1991. He served in Belize, Cyprus, Germany and Northern Ireland, where he completed six tours. Tony was also involved in the first Gulf War.

Les Keen

Les was evacuated during the SecondWorld War and can tell you what it was like to be a child during those years. He served in the Royal Navy after the war ended.

Peter de Graeve

Peter served in the 2nd Derbyshire Yeomanry Reconnaissance Unit during the Second World War. He was in command of an armoured car, and served in the Middle East, the UK, France and Belgium.

Wednesday 22 August

Bob Barker BEM

Bob began his National Service in October 1950. He served in Trieste before going to fight in the Korean War in July 1951 with the Royal Norfolk Regiment. He was shot while on patrol in 1952 and evacuated to a MASH unit before being sent home to recover. He was discharged in October 1952.

Fred Henley

Fred was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He served in the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean and with Russian convoys onmotor gun boats and on submarines.

George Evans

Bob Knights

Bob was in the Royal Navy from1952 until 1964. He served on a variety of ships as a Leading Radio Operator. In 1957 Bob witnessed H-bomb testing near Christmas Island in the South Pacific.

Thursday 23 August

Bill Green

Bill was in the 1st Battalion of the 3rd East Anglian Regiment from1959 to 1961. He served during the Malaya Conflict as a Private in the Infantry.

James O’Brien

James was an Able Seaman in the Royal Navy. During the Second World War he was an information broadcaster, a depth charge releaser, a forward supply partymember and a boatswain’smate. He was stationed in Portsmouth.

John was a Gunner with the Royal Artillery during the Second World War. He served in India, Changi, Taiwan and Japan. He was a prisoner in a Japanese prisoner of war camp.
