Imperial War Museum Duxford - Press Release

History comes to life with our talks and tours

Our popular tours return for a new season, bringing IWM Duxford’s past to life and telling the personal stories behind the atmospheric historic buildings that can be seen at the museum.

We’ll also be showcasing objects in our exhibitions and showing why and how they came to be part of the IWM Duxford collection.

New for 2012 is Unseen Duxford – the Southside Tour, which gives an insight into the historic buildings that can be seen every day by visitors as they explore themuseum. The tour tells the story behind the bricks andmortar and reveals the original purposes of these fascinating buildings.

Due to its popularity in 2011, we’ll be running The First World War Uncovered Special Interest Day again this year, but looking at different aspects of the Great War with brand new speakers.

Tours for 2012:

Duxford and the Battle of Britain Tour

Duxford and the Battle of Britain looks at Duxford’s role as a typical Battle of Britain Fighter Station. It examines the communications systems employed to win the battle in the air, including teleprinter communications and the Operations Room.

It also compares and contrasts the iconic aircraft flown during the Battle of Britain – the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and Messerchmitt Bf 109 – and gives visitors an insight into the fighter ‘aces’ who flew fromRAF Duxford, telling some of theirmore infamous escapades.

Don’tmiss this opportunity to learn more about Duxford’s role as a Battle of Britain fighter station. Groups will not exceed 25 and there will be an opportunity for questions, debate and personal interaction. Prices include admission to IWM Duxford.

TheDuxford and the Battle of Britain Tour will be held on Saturday 14 April, Saturday 2 June,Wednesday 11 July and Wednesday 19 September. Tours commence at 2pm from the entrance of AirSpace.

The Grand Tour

Perfect for the discerning visitor, The Grand Tour reveals the lesser-known stories and facts about IWM Duxford. In a whistle-stop tour of the museum, you’ll get an introduction to IWM Duxford and its fascinating history, followed by tours of LandWarfare, the American Air Museum, Conservation in Action, the Battle of Britain exhibition and AirSpace.

Groups will not exceed 25 and there will be an opportunity for questions, debate and personal interaction. Prices include admission to IWMDuxford.

The Grand Tour will be held on Saturday 5 May, Saturday 7 July and Wednesday 8 August. Tours commence at 10.30amfromthe entrance of AirSpace.

Land Warfare Tour

Land Warfare houses the finest collection of tanks, military vehicles and artillery in the country.

Over the course of the twentieth century, the mechanisation of warfare altered forever the way that battles were fought, won and lost.

Fromthe awesome artillery barrages of the First World War, through the giant tank battles of the Second WorldWar, to the high-speed mechanised conflict of today, Land Warfare charts the nature of this change.

Explore these fascinating exhibits during this ninety minute tour. Groups will not exceed 25 and there will be an opportunity for questions, debate and personal interaction. Prices include admission to IWM Duxford.

The Land Warfare tour will be held on Wednesday 9 May and Saturday 15 September. Tours commence at 2pm fromthe entrance of AirSpace.

Unseen Duxford – the North Side Tour

The North Side of IWM Duxford is not normally open to visitors. This tour provides a unique opportunity to explore unseen parts of IWM Duxford, in the company of a museumguide who will bring the atmosphere of these historic buildings to life with enthralling stories and anecdotes.

Seemore of the buildings which formed the domestic part of the fighter station during the First World War and the Second World War and find out about their role during Duxford’smilitary past.

Groups will not exceed 25 and there will be an opportunity for questions, debate and personal interaction. Prices include admission to IWM Duxford.

Unseen Duxford – the North Side Tour will be held on Saturday 9 June, Saturday 23 June, Thursday 5 July, Saturday 21 July,Wednesday 1 August,Wednesday 29 August and Wednesday 5 September. Tours commence at 2pm fromthe entrance of AirSpace.

NEW Unseen Duxford – the South Side Tour

If you’ve ever wondered what the historic buildings at IWM Duxford were originally used for, then this brand new tour will give you a fascinating insight into Duxford’s thrilling past.

Unseen Duxford – the South Side Tour gives a history of Duxford from its construction in 1917, through the Battle of Britain and the Second World War to the Cold War and the eventual closure of the site as an RAF Fighter Base.

Our knowledgeablemuseumguide takes a closer look at the formand function of the historic buildings that can be seen around themuseumand uncovers some of the fascinating stories that lie behind the bricks and mortar.

Groups will not exceed 25 and there will be an opportunity for questions, debate and personal interaction. Prices include admission to IWM Duxford.

Taster Talks

Available onmany weekdays throughout the year, Taster Talks shine a spotlight on specific aircraft and exhibits in the American Air Museum and tell their individual stories. Each Taster Talk lasts for approximately ten minutes.

Taster Talks are included in standard admission to themuseum. Children aged 15 and under enjoy free admission to IWM Duxford.

Introducing Duxford Tour

The Introducing Duxford Tour runs onmany weekdays throughout the year. A free, twenty minute tour of AirSpace, it gives visitors an insight into IWM Duxford’s impressive history, themuseumtoday and how to make themost of your visit.

The Introducing Duxford Tour is included in standard admission to the museum. Children aged 15 or under enjoy free admission to IWM Duxford.

Exhibition Tours

Onmany weekends throughout the year, free tours are on offer to all visitors wishing to knowmore about the permanent exhibitions in either AirSpace, Battle of Britain, the American Air Museum or Land Warfare.

Tours of AirSpace start at 10.30amand 12.30pm.

Tours of Battle of Britain, the American Air Museumand Land Warfare commence at noon and 2pm.

The First World War Uncovered Special Interest Day

Saturday 24 November Commences at 10.30am Marshall Auditorium, AirSpace

The First World War Uncovered looks at the lesser-known elements of the Great War and the aspects of thismomentous campaign that are still being discovered today.

Historical interpreter Richard Knight will be discussing The History of the Machine Gun in the First World War. He’ll show how weapons developed over the course of the Great War, using original examples of machine guns used in action. Richard specialises in the British Army during the First World War and the Second World War. He has been historical adviser on numerous films and television programmes.

Alistair Fraser and Martin Brown are battlefield archaeologists who have been working formany years on the battlefields of the First World War. Alistair Fraser gave a fascinating talk on The Ghosts of the Somme at last year’s First World War Special Interest Day. Together with Martin Brown, Alistair will discuss Finding the Fallen, taking two case studies fromtheir excavations and discussing the variousmethods of identifying unknown fallen soldiers.

We are also hoping to have an expert talking about the restoration of an Airco DH9 Bomber.
