Clacton Air Show

Up, Up and Away for Clacton Air Show Spectacular

Clacton’s 21st annual Air Show gets off the ground next week pulling tens of thousands of flight fans into the town each day and helping to boost the local economy.

The event – which is organised by Tendring District Council (TDC) – promises to be one of the best yet with a strong line-up of displays in the sky and plenty of activities for all ages on the ground.

Among the highlights will be the exciting return of the Red Arrows following their absence last year and the debut at the show of the Vulcan, which will attract enthusiasts from around the country.

The show takes place on August 23 and 24 with the main site on the town’s West Greensward where there will be a wide range of trade stands, stalls, live entertainment and refreshments available.

The Council will once again be operating a bucket collection for donations from those attending the free event with all the proceeds this year going to support the show in the future.

Stephen Mayzes, TDC’s Cabinet Member for Community Life, said he is looking forward to the two days.

“All the plans are now in place and we are just keeping our fingers crossed for good weather to bring in bumper crowds,” he said.

“If it stays dry and sun shines we can expect around 120,000 people over the two days and that would provide a valuable much-needed boost to the local economy.

“So many major events around the country have been affected by the wet weather this summer and it has been a difficult year for everyone. It would be great to see the sun out and visitors and local residents turning out in force to support the show.”

Cllr Mayzes said that a large amount of effort and work goes into organising what is the highlight of the District’s calendar.

“I hope that people will feel they can make a donation which will go towards a high standard event again next year,” he added.

The Council has once again received sponsorship from a number of firms which include Clacton Factory Outlet, Clacton Pavilion and Magic City, Clacton Pier, Butler Fuels, the East of England Co-operative Society, Harwich International Port and Liberata UK.

“Their backing is very much appreciated and without it we could not put on such a quality event,” said Cllr Mayzes.

For those who want to park as close as possible to the action then Clacton Rotary Club is running the official car park just yards from the West Greensward. It will also provide a shuttle minibus to and from the site for anyone with a disability plus one carer.

Air Show programmes, priced £3, will be going on sale in the next few days and will be available from Clacton Tourist Information Centre in Clacton Town Hall.
