The new owners of Leeds East Airport, formerly RAF Church Fenton decided to hold a two-day airshow in September 2015 called the 'Great Yorkshire Airshow' which featured a variety of classic jets, warbirds and aerobatics teams.

RAF Church Fenton had previously held annual airshows over the years which were very popular but the last one was held in July 1994.

The Great Yorkshire AirFest 2016 has cancelled.

Statement Re: Cancellation of the Great Yorkshire AirFest 2016

It is with regret that the organisers of the Great Yorkshire AirFest 2016 are announcing the cancellation of this year's event. The show, which was due to take place on 2-3 July 2016, has been cancelled following a particularly challenging year for the air show community.

A combination of factors has led the GYAF organisers to take the difficult decision to cancel the event. These include increased fees following the new CAA regulations, heavy investment required to support the show's infrastructure and, despite public interest in the event, a slow uptake in ticket sales.

A spokesperson said: "We are incredibly disappointed to cancel this year's Great Yorkshire AirFest. This year has been challenging for everyone involved in the air show community as we've seen from the number of UK shows which have been postponed or cancelled.

"At all times, our priority has been to host a safe and entertaining show for all visitors. Despite the great efforts and hard work from all the AirFest team, running a viable event for 2016 will be incredibly difficult.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has supported the AirFest in 2016 and hope to be back in the future."

All those who have bought tickets will be refunded in full directly through Eventbrite. For any other enquiries, please email info@yorkshireairfest.co.uk.

Church Fenton / Leeds East Airport History
Leeds East Airport, formerly known as RAF Church Fenton is an airport and former Royal Air Force station in North Yorkshire.

RAF Church Fenton was opened in 1937 and No. 71 Squadron arrived with the Gloster Gladiator. During the war it served within the defence network of fighter bases of the RAF providing protection for the Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and Humberside industrial regions. In 1940 it became home to the first RAF "Eagle squadron" of American volunteers being No. 71 Squadron RAF initially with the Brewster Buffalo I for one month before changing to the Hawker Hurricane I. The airfield was also home to both the first all-Canadian and all-Polish squadrons, with No. 242 Squadron RAF for the Canadians and No. 306 Squadron RAF for the Polish.

The first night fighter Operational Training Unit (No. 54 OTU) was formed at Church Fenton in 1940 and stayed until 1942 with some of the squadrons flying the de Havilland Mosquito. After the war it at first retained its role as a fighter base and was one of the first to receive the Gloster Meteor and also the Hawker Hunter. No. 7 Flying Training School was based here between 1962 and 1966 and again between 1979 and 1992, equipped with Hunting Aircraft Jet Provost T3 trainers. For some years it was home to the Royal Navy Elementary Flying Training School (RNEFTS) using the Scottish Aviation Bulldog. It later received the new turboprop-powered Short Tucano T.1. From 1998-2003 Church Fenton was the RAF's main Elementary Flying Training airfield. RAF Church Fenton closed in 2013 with all units relocating to RAF Linton on Ouse.

The site was sold on 23 December 2014 to Makins Yorkshire Strawberries. With the exception of a section containing the Air Cadets, Makins intends to keep the airfield operational. In February 2015, Makins Enterprises (the new airfield owners) launched their new website, renaming the airfield as 'Leeds East Airport'. It is believed that Makins Enterprises will target the business jet market, while also running a flying school and other ventures.
