RAF Bands Concert Tour Press Release
Let There Be Music
An intriguing blend of popular classics and toe-tapping film scores marks out this year's RAF Bands “In Concert Tour” as one of the Winter season's top musical events. From the devilish “Danse Macabre” and the searingly beautiful “Song of India” to the iconic “Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend”, the 2006 series of RAF Bands concerts bring together a first-class range of music.
Spanning the past century, classic 'Big Band' numbers such as the “RAF March Past” and “Moonlight Serenade” and the stirring “Tribute to the RAF” featuring excepts from “The Dambusters, “ 633 Squadron” and “Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines” will be performed alongside modern Abba arrangements and rousing Elgar melodies. Compered by Simon William, the actor and author probably best-known for his roles in “Upstairs, Downstairs” and, more recently, “Holby City”, the Tour features the RAF Bands and their Squadronaires, together with vocalists Sergeant Matthew Little and Emer McParland.
The national tour will be launched on 18th October at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow, marking a welcome return to the city after an absence of five years.
The concerts are held in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, which not only raises funds in support of the work of RAF charities, but also promotes the professional excellence of the Royal Air Force in all its branches. Members of the bands, quite apart from undertaking in excess of 900 engagements between them each year, are increasingly involved in overseas, operational duties. These duties run from support of medical units to guarding key installations and assisting in disarming insurgencies. Current band members have seen action in Kosova, Afghanistan and Basrah
