US REINFORCES 'SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP'
Despite considerable operational commitments around the globe, the United States has once again demonstrated its commitment to, and support of, the Royal International Air Tattoo by sending some of its most potent aircraft to the airshow.
These include the backbone of America’s long-range bomber force: two B-1B Lancers, and two B-52 Stratofortresses from US Air Combat Command.
And making their only appearance outside the American continent this year will be the West Coast Demo Team who will showcase the capabilities of the F-15C, arguably one of the greatest fighter aircraft of the modern era. Its steep and powerful ascent into the sky is one of aviation’s enduring images and is set to be among the highlights of the Air Tattoo’s eight-hour flying display.
They will be joined by USAF aircraft based in Europe including the A-10 Thunderbolt II ground attack aircraft, nicknamed the ‘Tankbuster’. The aircraft, which is also used in an observation role, is capable of performing short take-offs and landings and its low top speed of around 420mph enables it to provide ground forces with low-level close air support.
