NEWARK AIR MUSEUM - News Release

Newark's latest exhibit assembled

A Thunderbird Surface to Air Missile [SAM] is the latest exhibit to be assembled at Newark Air Museum's Winthorpe Showground site in eastern Nottinghamshire.

Developed by the Guided Weapons Division of English Electric Aviation, the Thunderbird SAM was a standard anti-aircraft missile system of the British Army from the early 1960s through until 1976.

The Thunderbird SAM could use the same mobile radar system as the Bloodhound and was described as being “designed for rapid deployment into open field locations, becoming operational in about 30 minutes”.

This new exhibit, which is pictured at the museum whilst being re-assembled will compliment the existing display of Bloodhound Radar Cabins at the museum.
