NEWARK AIR MUSEUM - News Release
Saab Viggen Official Handover Ceremony
December 6th 2006 at 12 noon
Newark Air Museum, Winthorpe Showground, Newark
An official handover ceremony for the Saab Viggen AJSH 37, 373 918 - ‘57’ will take place at Newark Air Museum’s site on Winthorpe Showground on Wednesday 6th December 2006.
In a short ceremony that will commence at 12 noon Capt (N) Bo Rask, the Defence Attaché from the Swedish Embassy in London, will handover the aircraft Log Book to Councillor Sylvia Michael, Vice-Chairman of Newark & Sherwood District Council who will accept the aircraft on the museums behalf.
The ceremony is taking place exactly one year after the museum was first notified that it was to receive a Saab Viggen on loan from the Swedish Air Force. Thanks to the generous assistance of personnel at RAF Cranwell, suitable landing facilities were provided at the Lincolnshire, which allowed the Viggen land there on February 7th 2006.
The aircraft was stored in under cover accommodation thanks to permission of the Royal Air Force and service contractor Serco, whose staff provided technical assistance when the aircraft was dismantled prior to being moved to the museum by road in June 2006. Representatives from the Royal Air Force and Serco will be present at the ceremony.
Reassembly of the Viggen was completed in October 2006 and the aircraft is now proudly displayed inside Hangar 2 on the museum’s Southfield Site.
