Thorpe Camp Progress - 2009
During a recent visit to Thorpe Camp with members of the 619 Squadron Association it was pleasing to note significant progress being made in many areas.
Located on a site near to near to Woodhall Spa, Lincs the Thorpe Camp Preservation Group displays a diverse array of exhibits that reflect Lincolnshire's long association with aviation.
The donation of several artefacts relating to the late Alex Henshaw has prompted volunteers to undertake the construction of a static-build Percival Mew Gull. Work is now underway on both the fuselage and the main wing spar for this imaginative project. The aircraft will eventually form a fitting tribute to this legendary British aviator, who was raised in Lincolnshire and educated at Lincoln.
Another innovative project is the construction of a mock-up Lancaster fuselage section. This is being built to AP2026 in three stages; the current build is the first stage, which features the flight-deck. This will be followed by the nose section and finally the fuselage aft of the flight-deck. This project has been supported by donated items from various organisations, including: an astrodome, bomber aimer's blister, instruments and switches from the Newark Air Museum. Whilst work is still at an early stage it nevertheless attracted a lot of attention from the 619 Squadron Association veterans present on April 17, 2009.
Finally, and slightly more up to date is the site's gate guard English Electric Lightning F.1A XM192. This always draws admiring glances from the passing motorists on the B1192 road between Woodhall Spa and Coningsby and has been spruced up ready for the summer season.
