Kemble Airfield will be opening its hangar doors again on Sunday 10th September. Kemble Open Day will try to recreate the atmosphere of the old RAF “At Home” Days that were common on most service stations up until the 1970’s. In effect this means that most of the aviation related companies now resident at Kemble Airfield will open their doors for you to see what goes on.
You will get the chance to visit all the flying schools (ASK, BCT, Astra etc.), Ultimate High, the Britannia Preservation Society, Kemble Flying Club and of course Delta Jets, and their outstanding collection of privately owned vintage jets. You may also be able to visit the control tower and view all the visiting light aircraft. Refreshments will be available and the popular AV8 restaurant will be open.
A vintage jet fly-in, as per the old Delta Jets Open Days, has been arranged to entice as many owners and operators of these aircraft to attend the day. Kemble Airfield was once home to many of these early jet aircraft. They are now increasingly popular with civilian pilots and we are always pleased to welcome them back. There will be no flying display but if the weather is kind some of the Delta Jets’ fleet will get airborne on routine sorties.
Kemble Open Day and Delta Jets 10th Anniversary will coincide with the launch of Nigel Walpole’s latest book. “Best of Breed” tells the story of the Hunter FR10 and its fraternity in the fighter reconnaissance role, serving in the 1960’s Cold War in Germany, the conflict in the Aden Peninsular, as watchdogs in the Persian Gulf and on the operation training squadron at RAF Chivenor, North Devon. Many personal anecdotes, from air and ground crew, have been added to facts drawn from the official archives, and the hardback book of 10,000 words is illustrated by some 500 photographs and maps, the majority hitherto unpublished.
Entry on the day will be £5 per person with children 15 and under going free.
