Punchestown, Naas, Co. Kildare - 6 and 7 June 2010
Ireland will celebrate a centenary of aviation in 2010. The significant events
are Shorts Brothers receiving an order from the Wright Brothers to become
the World's first aircraft manufacturer. The Aero Club of Ireland was
formed to foster aviation in Ireland and one its early members, Harry
Ferguson, became the first man in Ireland to fly an aeroplane. This was
followed in summer 1910 by Lilian Bland becoming the first woman in the
world to construct and fly her own aeroplane in Co. Down. The members of
the newly formed Aero Club of Ireland arranged for Ireland's first air
display scheduled for Punchestown racecourse, but this was cancelled and
deferred to Leopardstown racecourse in August 1910. Two weeks later the
Irish Sea was crossed by air for the first time.
These events will all be commemorated at Punchestown, Naas, Co. Kildare
on the Bank Holiday weekend, 6 and 7 June 2010 by an Air Show and
Exhibition. Invitations have been extended to many European Air Forces
