Duxford 2007 Press Release
Battle of Britain veteran makes journey from New Zealand to be at Duxford 2007 Air Show

90 year old Battle of Britain veteran Alan Burdekin will be making one last, emotional journey to the Imperial War Museum Duxford to be a guest at the Duxford 2007 Air Show on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September.

Mr Burdekin, who was a rear gunner and wireless operator on Blenheim bombers during the Battle of Britain and served during the Second World War, will be making the long and arduous journey from his home in New Zealand to see, for the last time, Duxford and to hear once again the emotive sound of piston-engined aircraft, such as the Spitfire, in flight. Mr Burdekin was briefly stationed at Duxford during his wartime career with the RAF. After the War, he moved to New Zealand to start a new life and initially returned to his pre-War occupation as a farmer.

He will be available to meet visitors to the air show in the Museum shop on the Saturday morning only and sign a new book "The Battle of Britain: The Camera’s View” by Roy Asser. Mr Burdekin is one of the veterans who features in the book.

For Alan Burdekin, this journey to Duxford and the air show has special meaning. “It’s a journey back in time really. I like to see the aircraft - it’s nice to see my old aircraft and meet my old mates - it’s a lovely day out.”

“It is a great honour to welcome Mr Burdekin to Duxford” said Tracey Woods, Marketing and PR Manager for the Museum, “He is, without doubt, one of the last of The Few and we are thrilled that he has decided to travel half way around the world to join with us at the Duxford 2007 air show. We will certainly be doing our utmost to ensure that his time at Duxford is both memorable and pleasurable.”

The show will also feature an exciting and broad range of some of the very best of British aircraft including the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight trio of Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire, perennially popular in this, their 50th anniversary season. Alongside these will be some air show favourites, such as the Chinook, Spitfires and the First World War Display team as well as the stunning aerobatic Redstarz and the only airworthy F-86a Sabre jet in the world.

The Duxford 2007 Air Show takes place at Imperial War Museum Duxford on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September 2007. As well as the flying display, visitors to the air show will be able to enjoy the whole Museum including the evocative Battle of Britain and Forgotten War exhibitions, conservation work in progress and the stunning new AirSpace exhibition.
