Duxford Spring Airshow 2009 - News Release
Spring Airshow
Opening Duxford’s 2009 air show season, the Spring Air Show celebrates the Best of British in an aerial spectacle that features civil and historic aircraft, both vintage and modern.
The aircraft taking part represents a range of famous British manufacturers, including Avro, de Havilland, Eurofighter, Hawker-Siddeley, Supermarine, Vickers and Westland.
Highlights of the Show include participation by the Eurofighter Typhoon (29 Squadron, RAF Coningsby), BAE Systems Hawk (208 Squadron, RAF Valley) and the stunning Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, featuring the Avro Lancaster, Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.
It also features celebrated British pilots including Guy Westgate, eight times National Glider Aerobatic Champion, who will be demonstrating his aerobatic skills in a Swift Glider and Pawnee Tug; Dennis Kenyon, former World Helicopter Freestyle Champion, who will be flying an Enstrom helicopter and Mark Jefferies, four time British Aerobatic Champion who will be flying an Extra 330C. In addition to this, the Spring Air Show features three British Red Bull pilots, who will be flying a P-51 Mustang and two Sukoi aircraft.
Visitors to the Spring Air Show will also be able to see the Percival Mew Gull in action. This legendary aircraft was flown by the outstanding pilot Alex Henshaw to win the King’s Cup Air Race, the most prestigious air race of the period, in 1934. One of the youngest ever pilots to win the Race, he also broke the record for a flight to Cape Town and back.
Also flying is the de Havilland Leopard Moth, in which Jeffery de Havilland won the King’s Cup in 1933.
In addition to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, there will be four Spitfires in action plus a Hawker Hurricane.
There will also be a display by a pair of Folland Gnats, the aircraft previously used by the Red Arrows, a display by a five-strong team of de Havilland Tiger Moths, the aircraft in which every British pilot was taught to fly prior to 1952 and a three-strong display of the de Havilland Chipmunk, the aircraft that took over training duties from the de Havilland Tiger Moth.
On the ground, there will be activities for all ages, including funfair rides, bungee trampolines, tank rides, and new for 2009, paint balling. There will be about ninety trade stands selling a wide range of products, from aircraft-related books, prints and paintings, to gifts and clothing.
The Flying Village is a special area dedicated to all things aeronautical, where visitors can meet representatives of the ‘Sally B’ B-17 Flying Fortress, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and many of Imperial War Museum Duxford’s flying partners, including The Blenheim Society and Duxford Aviation Society.
Celebrating the Best of British aviation, past and present, with a stunning display of aircraft, Duxford’s Spring Air Show will make a spectacular start to the season.
