Duxford 2006 Press Release
Veterans return to Duxford in honour of 'Grumpy' Unwin

Veterans from wartime Duxford’s 19 Squadron will return to Duxford this weekend for the last air show of the season in honour of George ‘Grumpy’ Unwin, who died earlier this year.

On Sunday 8 October comrades and friends of Wing Commander George Unwin DSO, DFM & Bar, one of the Battle of Britain’s most successful Aces, will return to their wartime base to present a cheque to Imperial War Museum Duxford for a memorial in his honour.

Vector Fine Art, who are hosting the veterans at Sunday’s event, raised the money for the tribute at Duxford’s Spitfire Anniversary air show in September.

Says Duxford’s Marketing and PR Manager Tracey Woods: “George and his Alsatian Flash were synonymous with Duxford during the Battle of Britain, appearing in many of our archive photographs. We are honoured to be chosen as the home of a tribute to him which will ensure that his time at Duxford is not forgotten.”

Duxford’s Autumn Air Show is the last major air show of the UK season and will feature the world famous French national aerobatic team the Patrouille de France alongside an F-16 Fighting Falcon and a Fouga Magister from the Belgian Air Force, a T-28 Fennec and air show favourites such as Spitfires, Mustangs and the ever-impressive RAF Chinook display.

The whole of the Museum will be open on the day for visitors to enjoy, with plenty to see including Duxford’s dramatic new £25 million AirSpace exhibition, The Battle of Britain and the evocative Forgotten War exhibitions, conservation work in progress and the stunning American Air Museum. There will also be over 80 trade stands selling all kinds of aviation and military related merchandise.

Duxford is located just south of Cambridge at junction 10 of the M11. Gates open at 8.00 am and the flying begins at 1.30 pm. Tickets – Adults £22, Senior Citizens/Concessions £19, Children £10.
