James May, co-presenter of BBC TV’s Top Gear, will be attending Flying Legends on 11 July,
where he will be signing books and meeting visitors between 10.30am and 11.30am.
Following on from his incredibly popular BBC Two series, James May’s Toy Stories, James
delves deeper into the stories behind Britain’s favourite toys with his new book, The Airfix
Handbook.
Avid viewers of James May’s Toy Stories will recall his ambitious project to create a 1/1 scale
Airfix Spitfire. The Airfix Handbook sees James return to the legendary modelling brand to
learn more about Airfix and its fundamental role in children’s lives for the past 58 years.
James raids the Airfix archives and uncovers a wealth of nostalgic imagery. He looks at
Airfix’s greatest kits, the history of the Spitfire in plastic and enters the world of modellers,
discovering that it has come a long way since his childhood memories of gluey fingers, fiddly
decals and busted propellers.
The Airfix Handbook provides a fascinating look at the history of the iconic brand of Airfix,
from the earliest model kits to the present day. There is also an expert step-by-step guide to
building a 1:72 Spitfire kit.
James May is a well-known writer, broadcaster and co-presenter of BBC TV’s Top Gear. He
also writes a weekly motoring column for The Daily Telegraph. James enjoys cars,
motorcycles, light aircraft and a drink, always in that order.
