Enjoy an Anglo-American celebration at Duxford

American Air Day on Friday 21 August 2009 showcases the work of the United States Air Force in Europe and in particular, the Third Air Force, partially based in the United Kingdom.

This family-friendly day comprises a rich mixture of flying and ground-based displays, including fly-pasts by many of the USAFE aircraft based in East Anglia, flown from RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath.

Participating USAFE aircraft include the MC-130 H/P transport, KC-135 tanker, F-15 Eagle fighter jet and HH-60 helicopter. There will be an exciting F-15 Eagle simulated airfield attack, a parachute jump from the MC-130 H/P transport and a simulated survivor rescue featuring the HH-60 helicopter.

In addition, Duxford’s flying partners will be showcasing legendary American aircraft, including the F-86 Sabre, P-51 Mustang, Stearman and Cub, with flying displays during the afternoon.

On the ground, USAFE personnel will be showcasing their work in the UK, as well as explaining some of the more intricate details of their aircraft, equipment and missions. There will be security dog demonstrations and a fire department display complete with fire truck, Sparky the Fire Dog and a range of fire fighting equipment.

There will also be a wide range of ground activities, including a display of stunning classic American cars and motorbikes, bird of prey demonstrations, a security forces display, including a police sedan, and a weather display with tactical observing equipment.

USAFE’s own rock band, Touch ‘n’ Go, will be playing throughout the day and USAFE’s Wings Booster Clubs will be manning stalls selling all types of American wares.

IWM Duxford’s on site restaurants and cafes will be getting into the spirit of the day, selling American style food and drink.

This fantastic day also acknowledges the historic link between Duxford and the United States Air Force that dates back to 1918 and is represented today by the stunning American Air Museum in Britain which is based on site at Imperial War Museum Duxford.

All flying is subject to weather, serviceability and operational commitments.
